| Sometimes, my obsessions seem even a little inordinate to myself. This monumental canvas of Montparnasse echoes many of my past city scenes from San Francisco and Los Angeles that express not only the city's shape and colors, but the individuals and cars that exist in the streets. Exaggerating distances sets off romantic passions, as well as controls the compositional directions. The color, although remembered, expresses the local color as night falls over the building horizon to the left of this late April evening. I seem to paint a symbolic sense of city neighborhood utopia that never glosses over the facts of its overcrowding. Instead. the composition organizes itself like some intricate piece of music and personalizes this corner made famous for its often misunderstood concept as a world art center history. |
